The Interview: Tips from a Wedding Planner
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with one of my favorite wedding planners in Las Vegas, Archel Rolwing Events. Aside from being a ball of fun, she’s such a HUGE help whenever I’m lucky enough to have a couple that she is planning with. She graciously allowed me to sit down with her and pick her brain on some top tips for brides and grooms planning to get married in Las Vegas!
Why Should Someone Hire a Wedding Planner?
A lot of clients are from out of town, and [the value of having ]someone who knows the area and the local vendors and venues, especially if it’s a place I’ve worked at before is so helpful.
For local couples, a wedding planner is someone outside of friends and family that they can talk to for an honest opinion. We can answer questions they may have about venue policies or local vendors. Planners know things that brides may not know. Something that planners see every day, brides may not know because this is their first time being married!
Have your couples ever shared with you what one of their biggest regrets is from their wedding day?
A lot of people know the value of photography and will invest in it. But one of the biggest regrets is not spending money on videography. When I was married, I wish I had a videographer and I wish I could change that. The other regret I hear is not having a “Day-of Coordinator”. People are relying on their mom, or their maid of honor to take on all the responsibilities of the wedding day and you probably don’t want your maid of honor setting up decorations when they should be with you in your hotel room getting their hair and make-up done, relaxing, and being a part of the getting ready photos. You don’t want to employ your guests. You need professionals to help you plan out and execute your day. Something I say time and time again to brides is that they need to let go and trust their vendors because they have been through these experiences and can really help make the day smooth.
Can you book the “Day-of Coordinating” and the “Wedding Planning” separately?
Yes! And anyone who books the all-inclusive wedding planning would of course also get the day-of coordinating as well. At the very least someone will be there with you to help you every step of the way on your wedding day.
What are some tips you’d like to give to brides?
People have no idea how strange our weather is! They think it is 100 degrees year-round, when actually it can get very cold here. So even though it seems like something that may be very small, it can hugely affect your day! Another tip is, and I really feel this way even with people who are hiring me, you should really be able to mesh with the vendors you hire. If you’re not comfortable or your personalities are super different, it will adversely affect your day. Especially someone who you’re working with so closely like your photographer, videographer, or your day-of coordinator. It’s really encouraged, even if you’re from out of town, to do a video chat or talk on the phone with a potential vendor.
Is there anything you wish brides knew while planning their wedding in Las Vegas?
A lot of people make the assumption that Vegas is cheesy, and it doesn’t need to be that way. I still have couples who come into town and want the fun Vegas vibe but at the same time, you don’t have to do an Elvis wedding. You can still invite friends and family and have a very special, and meaningful celebration.
