Overcoming Writer’s Block

Danette at her desk

I’m gonna be really honest, I hate blogging.  My typical week revolves around dreading the time at my desk where I have to sit down and conjure something great to say.  I actually don’t feel like I’ve ever accomplished saying something great, but that is the artist’s struggle.

You’re Not Alone

If you’ve ever felt like you’re terrible at blogging, or that you’re the only person who blogging doesn’t come naturally to, you’re definitely not alone.  I’d wager that most of us feel like that.  Actually, I’d be willing to bet that every single person on the internet who’s job it is to constantly churn out new content feels like that at some point.  We’re all in this boat together.

Today as I sat down to blog, I decided I wanted to write some encouragement.  Mostly, I need the encouragement because I hate blogging so much.  Its not that I don’t love the weddings I photograph or the amazing couples who I get to work with, its that my brain place doesn’t want to work hard at churning out a quality story that is both well written, and SEO optimized.  Its just hard guys.

Have Writer’s Block?

Almost every time my blogging day rolls around, I have nothing to write about, and nothing to say.  Or so I think.  When I sit at my desk, I put some chill music on (today it’s Wet’s Don’t You album – incredible), put my head in my hands and stress about the fact that I have nothing great to write about.

I fix this by forcing myself to open Pages and start writing.  I usually type out the first thing I think of.  Today it was, “I’m gonna be really honest, I hate blogging.”  I went with it.

Force yourself to start writing.  Something will come out of that marvelous brain of yours.  We are too well made (fearfully & wonderfully) to not have anything to say.

Remember the book ‘Purpose Driven Life’ by Rick Warren?  It was this huge phenomenon one year where everyone and their dog was reading it.  I didn’t read it because I’m a rebel like that, but today I’m totally thinking of that phrase – having a purpose driven life.  We all have purpose, and there is something that drives us forward constantly.  As humans, we need hope, encouragement, and purpose to propel us forward.  Our businesses need to have purpose too.  Having a purpose driven business means having an end-goal that is bigger than our profession, bigger than our area of work, and bigger than the business world.  My purpose today is to encourage you, and by proxy, myself.

You’ve got something to say, even if you don’t think you do.  Start writing.  Write something everyday.  (I have to thank my roommate for that, yesterday she told me she is purposing to write something every day)  Remind yourself that you ARE a writer.  Right?  Write.

Discouragement Is Your Enemy

If you’re feeling like you’re in a creative rut, thats ok, we all get there.  The way out is forcing ourselves to create, even when we don’t feel like it.  I knew someone once who constantly tried to force people into action by discouraging them.  I asked why once and they explained that the thought process here was, “If I discourage them, they’ll see their failure which will cause them to want to succeed”.

That doesn’t work for me.  When I get discouraged, I don’t want to fight to change, I want to wallow.  I know now, that I can’t do that.  Discouragement has done nothing for anyone ever, except lie to people.

Remember that.  Discouragement is a liar.

So thats all I have today.  I really hope it helps someone out.  I’ll leave you with this:

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
